May 18, 2016 2:15 AM in response to Vinylpeteby thunderzzz,Hi. You may try some steps on this article: If a flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac - Apple Support
If it does not help it is high time to take your device to the Apple Store.

May 18, 2016 2:21 AM in response to Vinylpeteby docreevez,I did not read an article, however, I know that this issue is caused by using an external hard drive as a startup disk. Reconnect the external hard drive, and it will boot. Once booted, the computer will guide you as you decide the settings you prefer.

Jun 2, 2016 7:11 PM in response to Vinylpeteby Johnb-one,Dear Vinylpete, sorry to hear that you are having problems, and the flashing question mark is part of those problems. Basically it means your Mac can't find a bootable hard drive. If you can, reboot, and start up pressing the command (that's the cloverleaf key) and the R key. Hold them down until your mac reboots, if all has gone okay,. you should be in the Recovery Partition, go to the centre of the screen where you will find OS X Tools, from there, choose Disk Utility, and run disk first aid and/or verify and repair permissions, which might help fix your problem. However, if it doesn't (and there's a chance it won't), then I second the advice provided by Thunderzzz. I hope you had a backup in place beforehand..... otherwise, make an appointment and take it in.....
good luck to you
