Q: MBP trackpad has 4 levels of pressure

Dear Community,

I own a Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch, Early 2015 (10.11.4). The strangest thing that happens to me and seems to be discussed nowhere is the following :

Occasionally, my ForceTouch trackpad has four levels of pressure : "click"-"click"-"click"-"click"

- the normal click is interpreted at the second level of pressure

- the force click is interpreted at the fourth level of pressure

If I un-check the Force Click in the preference pane, I have then three levels of pressure :

- the normal click is interpreted at the second level of pressure

- there is a third level that does nothing

How strange... and this happens at random times. Often on Safari, but sometimes with other applications.

Also, it goes back to normal sometimes, without apparent reason.

Have you been experiencing something similar ? Any clue to solve this ? I've tried the usual SMC reset but it comes back.

Hi, you can try to restore your Mac to the factory settings.

First of all, save all the files you want to keep (photos, documents etc.) on a separate drive or in the cloud. Make sure you are connected to the Internet. After that, follow these steps:

    1. Restart your Mac. Once it restarts and the grey screen appears, press and hold the Command and R keys.
    2. Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
    3. Select your startup disk on the left and click the Erase tab.
    4. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, and then click Erase.
    5. Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

    Thanks for the answer,

I forgot to specify : it is my built-in Force Touch trackpad, not the bluetooth one.

I would like to avoid Reinstalling the system, since we don't even know if it will solve anything. Overall, I am mostly surprised to be the only one  to experience that
