Q: 10.11.5 - gpu driver appears to be hung

Hi guys,

I'm new here but I wanted to share my experience regarding 10.11.5 and know is somebody else's got my issue. Since I installed the new update, I can't have a dual screen with my Mac Book Pro (early 2011). I've got a "GPU Driver appears to be hung" message in the console.app and the screen starts to glitch and the mac to freeze or sometimes crash.

I've tried to change the cable as well as the monitor but no success and it was working fine before (in 10.11.4). I was wondering if you had any advice for this matter on how can I resolve this. It's clearly coming from the AMD Radeon 6750M I've got, since the mac switches to the Radeon when I connect the monitor.

Here's the log even if I'm not sure it will help you: http://cl.kowaio.me/0p0H3T2c1B2i

and for my mac's info: http://cl.kowaio.me/0T3C2b2Z1b34

Thanks a lot.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), early 2011

    reset the SMC

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

if the issue continues boot into safe mode and try that.

    http://support.kaspersky.com/us/8366

outside of those options I'm not sure but since Apple does the greater portion of the GPU driver development internally they may have indeed "boned" the AMD drivers they need to fix it.

if you have a TimeMachine backup you may wish to restore to 10.11.4 and log the bug with Apple Computer

The suggestions to reset the SMC and booting into Safe Mode are solid.

If indeed the problem is caused by a bug in the gpu driver, they may not help.

In machines like yours, which have both an integrated Intel GPU and a discrete GPU, OS X uses the discrete GPU when you attach a second display. You may be able to work around the bug by forcing the use of the integrated GPU instead. The gfxcardstatus application can be used for that purpose. It is a small little utility that sits unobstrusively in the menu bar.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for your answers. I tried the SMC but no luck for now. However the link regarding safe mode and kasperksy is a little bit obscure for me since I don't use kaspersky soft on my mac, so I don't know what to do about that.

Regarding gfxcardstatus, I already installed that to force the integrated card when connecting the monitor. However, when doing that, the monitor isn't recognized and doesn't display.

    Thanks again!

Ahah, thanks a lot Jimmy. I'll check the safe mode tonight after work and I'll be back to tell you if it did the trick.

Thanks a lot again guys, you're a real help. I hope you'll find the correct link for the other guy then

    Hi guys,

So, after a lot of struggling and tests, I still didn't find a good solution. I did the safe mode and the SMC several times but as soon as I plugged the monitor, it freezed and sometimes the mac crashed. I had a little bit of faith this morning by just plugging the monitor without any app launched apart from console.app, and without doing anything it didn't glitched or freezed for a time. As soon as I launched Google chrome, it started freezing and the mac crashed. I rebooted, killed all app and plugged again the monitor. It instantly freezed and that's where I am now.

So for the time being, I'm just using the mac book screen to work but I hope to find a solution quickly. Unfortunately I don't have a time machine on this mac, my bad I know. So I'm kind of stuck…

Thanks again guys for your input.

This might be not related to the update at all. A lot of 2011 models have graphics issues: there even exists an extended repair program for them: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

    Hello Esquared,

I already had the MB changed actually regarding this issue in 2013, for free. So yeah I'm thinking of a new problem of the kind but that's weird. Also, it worked perfectly in 10.11.4 and started to glitch and freeze as soon as I updated to 10.11.5…

Hu, exact same issue here. Got motherboard exchange due to known MBP 2011 video issues. Upgraded to OSX 10.11, now display freezes frequently when using external card.

Was at an Apple support store today, they ran the graphics test twice, but it found nothing. Went back home, plugged in external monitor, failed within a minute, when launching chrome.
