I am creating a slide show the my son's end of the year grade party and I purchases songs via iTunes that they all know and love but in iMove the songs are unavailable or protected. HELP!!!

Most off the music you purchase in iTunes should be available in iMovie to be used in a sound track.
However, music with digital rights attached cannot be used, because the exported movie would no longer have the protection for the audio.
You cannot use songs you downloaded from Apple Music, and you cannot use songs with the file kind: "Protected AAC Audio file", for example, this song would not be able to play in an iMovie soundtrack:

The music you purchased a few years ago has DRM and it's not allowed to be shared.
iTunes has changed the rules and now no longer uses DRM on the music it sells. Download it again.

Good advice, but most of the songs I purchased earlier could not be converted by iTunes Plus to DRM free versions, because the iTunes Store does not offer these songs, and the most recent purchases again have DRM attached - starting this year.
