new itunes download completely screwed up my extensive playlists

A message from Apple, in the past few days, asked me if I'd like to upgrade to the new iTunes software. I clicked yes. Since that click, all of my playlists and some extensive work that I had in progress has been lost. How can I get back my old iTunes, and have it restored to what I had. I need to backup all of my stuff BEFORE allowing the new iTunes software on the computer.

Did you mean to type, "I should have..." instead of, "I need to"?
