When I right click to paste something, my Mac automatically highlights a space, a return, or the rest of the line...whatever is next to where I want to paste in my document. This highlighted area is automatically deleted as my copied information is pasted in. Is there a fix for this? This has been happening ever since I bought my Mac. I have the latest upgrade.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

And when I use Windows at work, I'm reminded that my regular way doesn't work on my beloved Mac.

I suffer from that everyday at work using Windows. Windows is an amazingly inconsistent and non-intuitive operating system that never works as I expect. It is riddled with "helpers" that consistently guess wrong about what I want to do. A large portion of my day is undoing what Windows thought I wanted to happen.
