Q: Apple wants to sell iPad pros as a Mac laptop replacement. One HUGE failing is the inability to use Back to My Mac from an iOS device. The VNC solutions are too flaky and slow.

NOT a question really other than for the powers that be at Apple. Do they actually travel with and use their devices? If so, have they noticed that when you travel with an iOS device you are effectively isolated from the desktop Mac one left back at home or in the office? It is 2016, this should not be hard.

This is a user forum, and one intended for the Apple Remote Desktop package.   Apple may or may not see suggestions here.

If you have product suggestions for Apple, please consider sending them directly.

I'd be very surprised if the Apple folks didn't travel extensively with their devices.

As for your question, I'd suggest posting up some of your particular requirements as a more general question over in one of the OS X forums.

I use iCloud drive to share documents and files across devices, though there are other options.  Using iCloud drive allows sharing documents across iWorks and other apps, for instance.

If you're envisioning desktop access from a remote Mac back to some other system, see Back To My Mac, or establish a VPN and use a screen sharing client or some other protocol for remote access.  (Having done this, remote screen sharing works, but I'd not suggest it's a particularly good alternative, and an mentioning this solely because you've posed your suggestion in the Apple Remote Desktop forum.  I'd also not suggest opening up remote file access to home systems, as ensuring the security and integrity of the home systems against remote attacks can be an involved effort, and mistakes can be problematic.)

Thanks for the quick reply. Since VNC seems to have issues with performance and Apple probably is never going to make Back to my Mac work from iOS devices I too have come to the conclusion that setting up a VPN server is probably my only choice. I was hoping the remote desktop wizards might have another answer that doesn't involve VPN.

RDP/VNC/ARD has and always will have performance issues when there are network performance limits and the much higher latency inherent in the network links and simply due to the longer distances involved.

RDP/VNC/ARD is asking for a whole lot of bits to be slung around the 'net and quickly, after all — that only works as well as it does with compression and other techniques.  And there's no known way around the effects of longer distances given the speed of light in fiber or copper lines.

I have a VPN and can connect via VNC into OS X systems (and others) and it's at about the bottom of my preferred list, due both to the overhead and the clumsiness of the whole interface.

Other approaches such as ssh and sftp are very efficient and far easier to use, in comparision.  As is iCloud drive, and other forms of data hosting.

Thank's for the info. I hadn't thought of ssh since I need to interact with graphic Mac OS apps. I have used it quite a bit locally to do the UNIX like things on the machine. I'll have to ;play around with it and see what I can manage to get done remotely.  Btw, I used to use LogMeIn before they went to a subscription model and that worked pretty well. Of courses Back to My Mac from another Mac has worked well for me.

Moving your data files to more network-advantageous positions can have lower overhead than using ARD/VNC/RDP to move your screen displays around.  Use the tools locally, and either use the data remotely and/or relocate the data locally.

My experience with the performance on LogMeIn has been on par with ARD/VNC/RDP, and largely limited to the performance and latency of the network links and all of the devices involved in the network link.
