My MacBook Pro has been really slow lately and a friend suggested that I switched the memory card for one with a higher capacity. Is this the best thing to do and if so can I bring my laptop to an Apple store to get it installed?

It could help but the odds are that something else is causing the slowness.
Without knowing exactly which MacBook Pro you have we have no idea if the memory is upgradeable or not. You need to provide more details.
