USB-C digital AV multiport adapter not working

I bought an Apple USB-C digital AV multiport adapter with new 12" macbook. I can't get the USB port on the adapter to work. I have an Apple superdrive which doesn't appear when I connect it. I've also tried connecting my camera to download pictures, but no luck. Both devices work fine when I connect them directly to my macbook pro. The power port on the adapter works (I can charge the macbook through the adapter). Any ideas?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Was Superdrive manufactured in 2010 or later? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202665

Have you applied the firmware update for the adapter? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205858

Update your 10.11.3 to 10.11.5.

Hi Billran,

I had this problem too, drives working fine on another Mac, USB input working fine with my lightweight camera, but none of my external drives mounting. Before trying too much 'voodoo', went to the Genius bar, and when the counsellor tried another adapter, it worked just fine. So it was just a faulty unit.
