iPhone 6 - Virgin.neet email account

Hi. I've just acquired my first iPhone. The set up has gone smoothly except for one issue: I can't send emails from my virgin.net account. Receiving emails works perfectly. I've used the settings shown in Apple's guide, but I get an error message saying "Username or password for smtp.virgin.net is incorrect. How do I resolve this issue?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3.2

One make sure you enter a password for your going mail server.

Second if that doesn't work contact your email provider to get the right information.

I've run into this with other email accounts. Road Runner seems to have this happen a lot. When you said that you did both, did you also go into the advanced section of your account settings under Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendar>[click your mail account] ? Navigate to outgoing settings and enter the password there? I know that pop-up asks you for the correct info, but for some reason sometimes it just doesn't input it into this section. Add your password in the field there if it just displays as "optional". Then try again. You may, in some cases, even be required to enter your username there as well.

Best of luck

I also used Apple's Mail Settings tool at https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/.

What was strange about the results it gave was that it identified the incoming and outgoing settings for (Mac OS) only. I have never seen this before, and I have searched a crazy number of email settings.

The language used in virgins own help documents seem to indicate that their service isn't compatible with iOS. Referencing Gino's post, it also specifically references Mac Mail client which is not the same as a mobile client such as the one iOS uses.

You may be looking at having to go through their website directly for this. I know that's a bummer, but there it is.

Don't let the reference to "Mac OS" throw you. The settings are the same whether you are entering them in Mail on the Mac OS, Mail on iOS or any other email application. They are merely pointing out that the wording on Mac OS is "Password"

For example, the setting, "IMAP4 SPA (Secure Password Authentication): Disabled" is unique to Microsoft email clients so it won't be found on Mac OS or iOS.

I wish that were always true. When I see Apple's mail settings website quote that though, I feel a little differently. I'm not saying there isn't some tweak that someone has found out there that will work for this, but officially supported? From what we are finding, that doesn't seem to be the case, so we are left with guesswork. That means if you call Apple, no one is going to have that information sitting in front of them. As the OP explained, if you call Virgin, they aren't really willing to help. That's kind of where we are now.
