May 19, 2016 7:36 AM in response to Terry Brownby turingtest2,This will presumably be an update of iTunes. Version 12.4 was release a couple of days ago. iPod classic and nano don't run iOS, that is the name for the firmware on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

May 19, 2016 8:06 AM in response to Terry Brownby Kenichi Watanabe,iPods (except iPod touch) do not run iOS. They have their own model-specific onboard software. Are you seeing this update notification on the iPod's settings screen in iTunes?

Except for really early iPod models, updates for an iPod's onboard software were bug fixes.

May 19, 2016 8:42 AM in response to Terry Brownby turingtest2,Where are you seeing the information about a software update? Occasionally Apple Software Update will run automatically to check for new updates. In some cases this has wrongly reported new software when the current version is already installed. If you're seeing a notification on the device's summary tab in iTunes that would suggest a firmware update for the device.

May 19, 2016 8:55 AM in response to Terry Brownby Kenichi Watanabe,Hard to believe a 3rd gen iPod nano actually has a software update, unless you put it aside for a long time and did not use it again until recently. It may have some minor data corruption, which makes iTunes think it needs a software update. If all of the iPod's content is in your iTunes library, you may want to do a Restore on the iPod. This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software (latest available version), and sets it to default settings.
After the Restore, re-sync its content as desired. OR, you can just keep using it as is, if nothing else is wrong.

May 19, 2016 10:52 AM in response to turingtest2by Terry Brown,When I connected it to my notebook, iTunes generated a popup. I haven't updated the software for that iPod in years so it caught my attention.

May 19, 2016 10:55 AM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby Terry Brown,I still use it a couple of times a week. I thought it was strange. I told iTunes to download the update and not install - it stuck at the progress bar but never downloaded near as I can tell.

May 19, 2016 11:02 AM in response to Terry Brownby Kenichi Watanabe,If you've been using it more or less continuously, there is no way the iPod actually has a new software update.
iPod (that are not iPod touch) do not get very many software updates. Generally (for a real update), my personal preference is to do a Restore (which installs the latest software after erasing the iPod) and then re-sync my iPod, instead of applying an Update over the iPod's current data. Why? Because I don't mind occasionally giving my iPod's onboard software a "fresh start." And there might be some hidden data corruption on the iPod.
