Only the person who initiated the Activation Lock can remove it.

The original owner does not have to give his AppleID. What he

has to do is in this link:

What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The original owner needs to do the actions listed in the part "If you no longer have

your iOS device". Your 'friend' and you should read the link as well as there

are actions for you to complete also.

If the original owner still refuses to assist, return the iPhone to the original owner for a refund.

There is no workaround for Activation Lock.

Without that information you will not be able to update and activate the device. You need that information from the original owner or have the original owner log into iCloud and remove the activation lock. Your friend may have purchased, or acquired, a stolen device. Without the activation information your friend has a brick.

Activation lock is there to protect stolen devices from being used. Providing a work around sort of defeats that purpose.
