Drop down menu missing for setting background picture on 'Desktop-Screen Saver' screen.

In the Desktop/Screen Saver screen, the drop down menu showing 'center/tile/fit to screen' etc. options has suddenly gone missing.

I'm running El Capitan on an iMac.

This happens in any account.

I don't have 'Change Picture' ticked.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, I'm afaid I have to contradict you, I had this dropdown menu available since I installed El Capitan in October last year and used it the day before yesterday. For some reason it is not there today, hence my post.

I'm running two installations of OSX on my Mac, the other being Snow Leopard in another partition but I haven't been doing anything strange in the El Capitan version.

I was hoping that someone might know how this problem could arise.

Yes I am running el cap.

I would first run the DiskUtility>First AID on your Disk.. If it needs repairs you may have to Boot into Recovery.

Recovery http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

If that does not sort it out, From Revovery I would try reinstalling the OSX

Try running the Combo update on top of your existing El Cap This is known to resolve out varies problems such as yours.

Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 Combo Update

If that doe not sort it out Reboot into Recovery and Reinstall the OS X on top of your OS X. This will leave all user data untouched.

  • If you use the Recovery System stored on your startup drive to reinstall OS X, it installs the most recent version of OS X previously installed on this computer.
  • If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased.

As always good to have a current backup plan in place.

Thanks for all the replies. I've tried everything including a reinstall. but still have a problem.

After some playing around, I've discovered a peculiar situation.

When I choose a picture in any of the Apple directories, the dropdown menu vanishes.User uploaded file

If I choose a picture in any of the self included folders, the dropdown re-appears.

I guess that implies that some parameter is missing/incorrectly set/ in an OO applet, or some other such glitch is present. The odd thing is that a reinstall didn't cure the problem, which in turn implies that the problem lies in the pre-existing folder parameters/access data and not in the operating code.
