Q: How can I change highlight and text colors in Mail 9.3?

Select the color you want, then continue typing. The color change will continue with all new text until you change it again. Is this what you meant by your follow-up question?

May 19, 2016 3:17 PMby blountcomick,I did not make my question clear. I rarely use color when writing an e-mail and my question is not about messages I write.
When I open Mail and view the message list of Inbox, Sent, Junk or Trash, the text in the message list is orange. If I single click on a message that line is highlighted in purple with orange text. I want to change the orange text and/or the purple highlight.

May 19, 2016 3:17 PMby dianeoforegon,It could be an aging Mac that is showing incorrect colors. Open System Preferences > Display and see if recalibrating your Mac will help.
You might want to make a rule that changes the text and/or the background color for your incoming messages.
This example runs on every message. You can click on the + sign to add additional criteria.

The link I provided in my previous post: : actually changes the background color of the selected message, and as noted by dianeoforegon, you could also make a rule to change the color. That is why I included the Rules link in my first post.

In Mail preferences you can go to "Viewing" and either select it or not. The if you click on the dim box to the right of that option it will open a color wheel to choose from (see the cut & paste below the "Viewing" screen shot).

That was also the reason that I included the Viewing link in my first post.
