Q: Iphone 5s not restoring/updating while in recovery mode

So I bought a Iphone 5s 64 gb from my friend. i obviously had to erase all the Information from the phone and use my own account, So thats what i did all was well and good until i got to the activation stage of the setup. It wouldn't activate cause it was searching for a network. i took to the internet to try and solve the problem i was advised to restore it from iTunes to solve the problem but it wouldn't restore at all so i was again told to put the phone into recovery mode and try again sadly it is not working yet again. I have tryed everything from deactivating my security soft where to buying a new sim, troubleshooting ports changing cables changing computers (even tryed it on a mac) this obviously is very frustrating and i am becoming angry with the lack of options i have left.i get aroung three quatres through the restore then i get the message "the iphone iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (-1)" I hope i can find a solution here. all and any help is much appreciated

Cathal

So they were advising that the issue was related to hardware then it seems, based on their inability to assist for the reason of the 3rd party screen replacement. I am afraid I have no further options to provide you. I was not aware of the screen being replaced by a 3rd party before, but now that you are receiving these errors, it is starting to fit. In the replacement of the screen, if proper safety measure were not followed, an ESD (electrostatic discharge) may have occurred in the phone. When Apple works on these, they use a special mat and ground wristband to ensure this will not happen. The effects of an ESD are not always immediate, but it seems likely this is what was the cause of it since the phone was working fine before. Just the same, the replacement might have been done perfectly and something in the phone just finally stopped working.

I am sorry to not be giving you better news, but after all that you have tested, again I have to believe this is a hardware issue.
