Can I remove the front glass of iMac?

My daughter just broken the front glass of our 2011 iMac. This is the older non-slim iMac. The LCD still works fine.

Can we just remove the front glass and continue using it? If yes, do we need any special tools?

I haven't performed any detailed analysis on the photo so I am not certain. Is there a magic method you used?

To get 6" of diagonal screen real estate, the difference in dimensions isn't huge.

  • 21.5" - 17.75" H x 20.8" W
  • 27" - 20.4" H x 25.6" W

Just visual, I was able to tell it was 27", sure hope I'm correct on that otherwise I'm going to feel a little foolish.

A 2011's iMac glass is just held in by magnets. If you can get a couple of suction cups (any $2 ones at a hardware store will work) will pull it off. However because the screen is already broken you may be better just picking the glass out and using a vacuum to get all the shards out. You can usually find the glass on E-Bay, so although the damage looks bad, for about $100 it should be fine.

You can find a video below that shows how to remove the glass:
