- The early 2011 ones only have Internet Recovery if the firmware was updated to add Internet Recovery

says you will go to the Recovery partition and then erase/format the startup drive but only be able to install El Capitan.
If your Mac has Internet Recovery then try depressing the Command+Option+R keys during bootup and you should boot to Internet Recovery. That will allow you to format the startup disk and install the OSX version that came with the Mac or Lion if the firmware was updated for Internet Recovery.
