Q: iMOvie export error

When in iMovie on iPad mini 3 16 gig I try to save project as video to Photo app, an " unknown error" message appears.

What could be causing this?

I have 3 Gig of space avaiable on my device and have previously been able to save a 20 min 700 meg file to the device (iPad).

I have tried to save to iTunes, but the 4 minute High definition clip does not appear in iTunes.

Please help.

    Try these steps:

    1. Go to your Library (open the Go menu with the Alt key pressed)

    2. Go to the Preferences folder and locate the file called "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist"

    3. Move this file to your desktop.

    4. Restart your Mac and try to open iMovie once again.

It could be any number of things. Unfortunately they only provide a vague 'error occurred' notice so it's nearly impossible to know what happened

One thing to try is to make an easily reversible change to the project, perhaps add a filter to the first clip in the timeline, and see if it exports. If it works, remove the filter and try the export again. If it also fails, remove the filter and you are back where you started.

It might be a problem with one of the files in your project. Unfortunately for this case, there is no real easy way to figure out which file causes the problem.

You mention sharing to iTunes. This feature does not save it to your iTunes library, rather to a location on the device that you can access via iTunes on a computer.  If you want to access this, connect the device to a computer, launch iTunes, tap the devices menu, then tap on the device. From there, select 'Apps' in the sidebar, scroll the main window down to the bottom where you should see a Documents section.  Tap on iMove. To the right will be anything that was shared to iTunes on your device. You can drag files out from there.

Lastly, from the projects detail screen, share the file to another Apple device (Mac, iPad, etc). Open the project in iMovie on that device and try to export the project.

    Thank for this. It helps.

It seems that a project file or files where deleted and therefore the project would not save or export video. After rebuilding project export was successful.

Thanks for clarifying export to iTunes. Will try that in future.
