Q: My Mac was bought in November 2014. The fan is making a purring noise but stops when I lift it up and hold it vertically. I have just received it back from repair at the John Lewis workshop as it was making a louder noise before.

My Macbook (one and a half year old). The fan has become noisy and I have just received it back from repair at John Lewis. The problem is I think it is still too noisy. It does not run fast but it is noisier than it was when we first bought it.  Also the fan noise stops when I hold the Mac on end. Is this normal?  Thank you.

MacBook, iOS 9.3.2

There is no such thing as a 1 ½ year old MacBook with a fan.

    The 12" MacBook doesn't have a fan.

The last MacBook with a fan was the 2010 model.

Perhaps you have either a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro, if so, you should post your issue to one of those forum areas.

Run an Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics (which ever is applicable for your Mac)

    This is not normal

If you are not satisfied with the repair— by all means return to have them resolve your issue.

There is typically a limited number of days guarantee on work done.

My son's 2012 MacBook Pro was showing intermittent fan noises and temp issues. He found that a bit of plastic from the battery case had chipped off when his toddler pulled the computer off the table. Sometimes it would stop the fan and other times it would make odd noises depending on the position of the computer.

His model has a user-serviceable back panel. Although he had open several times, the offending bit of plastic stayed in hiding until the day my son inverted the computer with the back panel removed--the tiny plastic troublemaker finally fell out.

Fixing it depends on the model, which has already caused confusion here. This thread is in the MacBook Pro forum but says MacBook in the text. A MacBook and a MacBook Pro are two different Apple models. When the computer was made also makes a difference. Retina display models of the MacBook Pro are not user-serviceable. So what does "About ths Mac" say about your model? Should be something like this:
