Q: Latest Update Causing System Memory Error

I just ran the update on my iMac and have the spinning color wheel of death!  The system has run out of application memory twice!!!

I have an iMac 27-inch late 2009

I can't get anything to work and the system has 16GB installed.  I had a similar issue with Mail eating all the application memory when I did an update in December and now it is happening again.

Please help!

Dead in the water.

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Try restarting your Mac in Safe mode:

    - Shut down your Mac

    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

    - Once you see Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)

    - Click on Verify Disk and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk

    - After this, click on Verify Disk Permissions and then on Repair Disk Permissions

    - After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds

    Hope this helps!

It is probably something else, not the memory.

Can you make a etrecheck list: read here about it, than download it, run it and post the list here.

If for piece of mind you do want to check your RAM:

Apple recommends using their diagnostic for any RAM test if you feel compelled to investigate your RAM

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

there are some other free testing utilities out there and I have used them on both Mac and PC, they appear to offer additional flexibility than the Apple one but as to their effectiveness I'd go by what the Apple Test reports first.

I have not much experience with AHT, but it has not a very good name, slow (especially the ram test part) and not very conclusive. If it says bad, mostly it is bad, if it says nothing wrong found, it may still be bad. The Genius bar has very good testing software.

    Hello WigglyWaggly,

obviously the alerterdaemon is causing trouble... but there is more.

    1. In SystemPreferences panel:

    uninstall Hosts, Growl, MacFuse, GoToMyPCpreferences.

    2. Uninstall Cisco Anyconnect completely.

    restart now.

    3. why are you using two password apps? Which one do you prefer?

    4. do you still need Citrix?

    5. do you still use Logmein?

    6. do you still have the Canon multifunction printer?

    7. MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins:  delete CouponPrinter-FireFox !!

    8. SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab:  remove all entries with the minus sign underneath, after this you have to manuallly start apps you want to run. keep it that way. But do not delete  IJscanner when it is there.

    Now restart.

    9. SystemPreferences->Library->Launchdaemons:  delete all entries with 'cisco' in the name;    delete kliem.timemachinescheduler !!

    10. SystemPreferences->Library->LaunchAgents: delete the entry with  'coupon'  in the name  !!

    restart again.
