Q: AppleTV typ of internet makes problems

Hello everybody,

first a little question btw: does i have to ask further questions in English or can i do it in german?

now to my Mainproblem...

Im watching all day series on AppleTV, over Netflix or Itunes. Since some days i cant play my series anymore, Errormessage. but my AppleTV gets Internet (Homenetwork, 50MB/s+). My only option at this moment was, to skip 3 episodes, the 4th i can watch. But during the complete Serie, it never saves my last position i sas watching.  (im in Volume 4, not even before 2month it saves it as i started with volume 1). Now i tried to use my IPhone as hotspot and ALL works again...(as long i use hotspot) Its save the position, all videos are watchable, but i habe to wait until its loaded, cause my phone "just" gets 5-15MB/s internetspeed.

im confused, why AppleTV accept lowspeed phone network, but not homenetwork? Both internetprovider (home, phone) are the same. Only diffrent: phone is wifi, hone is cable. But 5years or more the TV works, and all times the network gets modified, nothing happend. And the last time network has been modified, is lobger ago as this problems are known.

kind regards

When you use the phone hotspot, the ATV is connecting to it by WiFi. And it is using the default DNS for that service.

When you use the internet connection, does ATV also use WiFi, or is it connected by wire? Are you using the default DNS from the ISP?

Are you using a VPN or other service to access the internet? Is that service different for the phone hotspot and the internet?

MY HomeNetwork is conected by cable, but administrating is done by my stepfather so i cant give you the Informations you need, also cause i dont know what these are (DNS; ISP; VPN etc.) cause this i asked if it is possibile to ask in german... we have a network made special from the provider Swisscom, with their own gadgets. Before, we got Apple Towers, but this was to problematic. The ATV is directed conectet by wire to a receiver with a 5GHz net. Do you think the problems will gone if i conect the ATV with wifi to the network? because earlier and also (i think and hope) nat the moment normal Films and already watched Videos are working normal. I'll reply again in some hours or tomorrow again if i can find out some of the needed Informations you asked for. But atm i got Meetings/Events.

Do you watch TV programs from the United States? If you have a special setup to do that it will work differently with your Internet Service Provider than with your phone.

If the ATV is not on WiFi, you could try it, and it might work better.

Hi. first, sorry for late reply

i tested something, and i can tell you its nothing with the Internetprovider or so. If i disconnect the ATV from my Receiver and connect it with cable to thecrouter, everything works again. Also if i use another ATV, its the same Result.

My stepfather think the WiFi-Network does not get enough Internet-Speed, and if the ATV notices it, he cancel play and call out error.

So my last question is, does the ATV check internetspeed and requires a minimum of speed?

I note you use the 5GHz band for wi-fi, whilst this is often less prone to interference it also has a shorter range and is more easily blocked bu walls and floors etc.

Whilst 2.4 GHz wifi is most commonly the cause of interference, both 5 GHz wifi and even ethernet on occasions can also suffer this problem. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

The following article(s) may help you.

You may also find some help on this page, where I’ve collected some of the more unusual solutions to network issues.

DNS is only likely to be a problem if it's been changed from the standard setting supplied by your service provider, your step father should know whether he has changed it or not.

Hi, there's something I do not understand. You said the ATV is directly connected to a Receiver on a 5 GHz network, and you have problems with this. But when you connect ATV directly to the router, it works ok. What is this Receiver? Can you connect ATV to the WiFi network directly, using its internal WiFi, without using the Receiver? That should work better.

Hi. Thanks for your Replies. I dont use a receiver, its a repeater as i found out. https://www.swisscom.ch/en/residential/help/device/home-network/wlan-repeater.ht ml

I can't switch to the 2,4GHz Network and i also dont want it, cause its slow. On the Repeater i have my PC, ATV, SwisscomTV and (wlan) Ipad. My Stepfather told me, the problem has to be ITunes /Apple, because all other ATV works and the receiver isnt able to block the Internet for ATV.

I cant try most of your offers, cause i cant move the ATV (its fixed where it is) and the router and the Administrating of the network is done by my stepfather.

The Network cannot be change and im not going to buy the new ATV. Apple only watch his money, i payed 200€+ for my series i have to stream with my handy. It cannot be, that apple produce something thats not compatible to the EU / CH Networks, also before some weeks i can watch everything (exclude this one Serie im watching now: Smallville) in all Accounts on this ATV, German and Swiss acvounts include, but now, nothing works more!

Im thinking about a reset for the ATV...

Btw, this website, isnt it from Apple?? So why its not harmonizes with the IPhone? This TextEditor is just bad.

THx for Help anyway, and thx Apple for remove EMail support, produce bad Gadgets, programming bad webites etc.

i dont think you can help me anymore, its Apple...

The Apple TV doesn't work well with repeaters. Extend your network via ethernet using a wifi access point to bridge the network.
