Photos on iPad?

I have just over 3GB of photos taking up storage on my iPad and I was wondering is it possible to remove those photos whilst leaving them just on iCloud so when I want to view them I view them via iCloud. Also when I take a photo/video can it be sent to the Cloud rather than reside on the iPad and the Cloud?

Basically I just want my photos & videos to be stored and available from iCloud.

Thanks

Hi Schrodinger56

You can turn on iCloud Photo Library (Settings > iCloud > Photos). This will however most likely require you to purchase more iCloud storage s Apple only gives you 5GB for free.

iCloud storage plans

This will store your whole Photo Library in the cloud. After you turn on iCloud Photo Library, be sure to also turn on Optimize iPhone/iPad Storage (also in Settings > iCloud > Photos). Photos will be available on your iOS devices but this will allow iOS to optimize/manage the amount of storage they consume.

You are welcome. Optimize will save a lot of storage on your iPad but keep in mind that what you end up with on the iPad are thumbnails, the actual photos would be on iCloud. Whether the resolution of the photos on the iPad is good enough for you or not, only you can answer. Best... 🙂

That is not really true.

The Optimize Storage option only stores the latest images you've taken or viewed on your devices; the rest are stored at thumbnail-size, but are automatically downloaded to the device at full resolution if you view, edit, or share them.
