Q: Display TimeZone in Menu Bar

In System Preference, I select:   [x] set time zone automatically using current location

On the menu bar at the top of the screen, you see the time.

Wouldn't you want to see the Time Zone too?

Tue 9:28 MST

I played a bit with the international stuff, trying to re-format this string, but no luck.  Seems things have changed in Mavericks and Yosemite.

(and to make matters worse, if I don't click [x] set time zone..., it's causing a problem with FaceTime and AppleID verification.

Anybody know how I can get my clock on the menu-bar to display like the above:

  • without adding a 2nd clock to the menu bar?
  • without modifying all the other places the date/time string is used (e.g. mail)?
  • without having to click something?

hmmm. why?  you do not know where you are?

To make System code modifications you may have to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection)

A third party app may be able to do this for you:

    https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/time-zones-menu-bar/id935520935?mt=12

May not be specifically what you are looking for but you could create a apple script to open System Preference>Time Zone  where it is displayed

It's not possible, not without a third-party hack or application.  Setting the time zone ensures that the correct time is displayed, it doesn't mean the actual time zone will be shown alongside the time.  It doesn't say that, it doesn't even imply it.

Hotel WiFi is notorious for having setup problems.  So yes, I know where I am.  I'd like to know that if I let the WiFi adjust my TimeZone that it does it correctly.

If the menu were to display PST, MST, MDT, etc... then I could glance at it and know it was correct.  Otherwise, I'd have to check it against my watch or my phone.  ...

... which brings up another options.  Wouldn't it be cool if Apple gave OS X the option of getting the time via your iPhone (instead of WiFi).  The phone seems to always have the right zone, and I can't think of any time I've been on the computer without my phone nearby.
