What is CPU load when hot? Make sure that in Activity Monitor All Processes is checked under the View tab. See:

Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support

The battery is good for about 1000 cycles and you are very near that with 944 cycles so it is not unexpected that your battery is near end of useful life. However, useful life is really how log you want run time to be on a full charge.

This is the Mac Pro desktop forum. I requested your post be moved to the MacBook Pro laptop forum.

Sorry about the post. Is there a way for me to repost in laptop forum?

Aside from the battery that should be replaced, the fan is not operating.

    Try a SMC reset:

If no success, you can run an Apple Hardware Test which may confirm a faulty fan.  A better option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  A replacement fan will not destroy the bank account.

    Ciao.

Does your MBP mid 2009 still have a spinning hard drive or did you replace it with an SSD? I talked at length with a Apple Genius (confidentially) that Yosemite and above are not optimized for spinning HDs. My wife's mid-2010 MBP has experienced oodles of non-fixable issues (even after replacing the hard drives) with Yosemite. So, switch to a SSD before you buy a whole new computer.

I gotta say that I am still running Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MBP and it is absolutely a dream. Rock solid. I am considering updating to Mountain Lion but am so ambivalent about it. Apple lost its focus on the consumer... totally, with its lackluster and partially unusable new OSs for still great computers. Sad.
