Assigning Multi Mixer Channels to Separate Tracks in Logic

Greetings,

I have Logic Pro X 10 and a Yamaha MG10XU Mixer. I am trying to set up the recording session so that I can record multiple mics through the mixer to separate tracks in the Logic session (e.g. record vocals and guitar simultaneously through separate mics to separate tracks in the Logic). All I've figured out how to set it up so that I get two tracks recording at once, but both tracks are just a mix of what's coming through the board, i.e. both tracks are identical with both guitar and vocals rather than being separated to the discrete tracks.

Anybody know a way out? Is there a plugin I'm missing that allows me to assign different mixer channels to specific tracks in Logic?

Thanks for you help!

Hi Mark,

So far you have done everything right and got it patched correctly to work but you have reached the limits of your equipment. Your mixer will only output two channels and you need more. There are several ways to extend this functionality but like a lot of people you may be reluctant to spend more money.

Multitrack recording: ie, eight tracks or more is expensive but if you are serious about audio production and especially if you own a Mac computer then cost will not be an issue. ( If you owned a high powered sports car, would you really use low grade fuel and inferior tyres).

The first upgrade will be to get a mixer with a Multichannel output and this usually comes with a greater number of Mic inputs. Those inputs can be fed individually to multiple tracks in Logic.

Alternatively you could upgrade to a Multichannel interface. Up to 24 inputs and outputs to Logic. This scenario requires a Mixer with individual outputs. eight at least, known as direct outs. This is by far the best configuration and most versatile as with a sixteen track Mixer you can dedicate eight channels for Mic or Line inputs and have eight returns to the mixer for pre mastering and monitoring preferences.

It is really a simple task. Think about what you want to do, draw a block diagram and trace the signal through and work out what equipment you need to replace the boxes you have drawn.

If you need further clarification, don't hesitate to ask. I am not growling or criticising, it's just that I see many posts from people in this situation who have been misinformed.

Regards,

David.
