"Messages from iPhone" icon keeps appearing in Dock

I went through this with Yosemite as well. Don't recall which step(s) resolved it, but things were fine until I upgraded to El Capitan. The 'Message' icon will not stop appearing on the left side of my Dock bar. I've done the following based on advice found in searches:

- opened iMessage and disabled my account (which is what all of our mobile devices are logged in using)

- opened System Preferences...Notifications, clicked 'Messages' on the left pane, selected 'None' and unchecked all 5 checkboxes

- rebooted

Inevitably, as soon as someone in the family gets a text, the "Messages from iPhone" thumbnail reappears. It's ridiculous, and it's maddening.

Hopefully someone has a solution...

Thanks

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Thanks for responding so quickly. The icon first appears on the left side of the Dock bar. After a few seconds it will go away, but of course will reappear later after another text. If I right-click that icon, I get only the "Open" option. If I select this option (or double-click the icon to begin with), the iMessage app pops up and of course the icon appears on the right edge of the Dock bar. Right-clicking that icon gives me these options:

New Message

My Statis: Offline

Options --> Keep in Dock, Open at Login, Show in Finder

Show All Windows

Hide

Quit

I've tried quitting the app, hiding it. Nothing works permanently.
