Q: Ancient Nano 5th gen sync problems

Hi

I use 2 nano 5 gens for various activities where I don't mind losing them... eg in my vehicles

I'm running windows 10

Itunes version 12.4.0.119

I have the most up to date driver on the ipod

The ipod appears in my ituness but I cannot sync any new songs to the ipod, either by drag and drop or through a menu, although the option to sync with the ipod appears.

Can I get them to sync?

If the answer is no thats fine but then my question becomes how do I get the music off that is not already on itunes?

Thank you

iPod nano, Windows 10, Itunes version 12.4.0.119

5th gen iPod nano is not THAT "ancient."  I still use one to track my running.

If the answer is no thats fine but then my question becomes how do I get the music off that is not already on itunes?

That indicates to me that this iPod is currently not set up to sync with your current iTunes library.  If it was, all songs on the iPod would be in your iTunes library.  iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod music transfer," you should get some useful links.

Having songs that are only stored on an iPod is risky.  You can lose iPods (especially if you "don't mind losing them"), and they can break or need a Restore due to data corruption.  Once you get the iPod's song files off-loaded and added to your iTunes library, so that ALL of your songs are in your iTunes library (stored on your computer), you can set up automatic syncing to associated the iPod to the computer.  You can do a Restore on the iPod, if necessary.

    Hi Kenichi

    Thank you for replying

Yes you are quite correct it doesn't sync. Do you have any suggestion to help me get it to work with itunes? Transferring songs is a secondary option

If you don't need to off-load songs from the iPod, here's how to set it up to Sync Music using automatic syncing.  It may be set up to load content manually or it may be set to sync with a different iTunes library (not the one you currently use).

Select iPod in iTunes.  In the latest iTunes, click its device button on horizontal bar, to show its settings screen in iTunes window.  Here's a screen shot of iTunes window (upper left corner) showing the iPod's device button (circled in red)

    Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 7.50.31 AM.png

On the iPod's settings screen, along left side (in the sidebar), under Settings, click Music.  The iPod's Music settings screen is shown to the right.

NOTE:  Any songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library (on the computer) will be lost.

Checkmark the box for Sync Music.  This turns ON automatic syncing, or (if needed) associates the iPod to your current iTunes library.  If your iTunes music library can fit on the iPod, you can use the option to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, use the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then make you selections from the lists below.  For example, you can create and maintain (one or more) playlists in your iTunes library, with songs you want on the iPod.  Back on the iPod's Music settings screen, under Playlists, find and select (checkmark) those playlists.  Click Apply to sync your music library (or selected portion of it) to the iPod.  Going forward, iTunes automatically keeps the iPod "in sync" with changes to your music library (or selected portion of it), when you connect iPod (or click Sync if already connected).

If that's not the problem, please post back with any more details.

Hello Kenichi:  I am nypdbluetpd@yahoo.com and communicated with you a while ago regarding my inability to transfer songs from my I tunes ( in my new Mac Mini)  into my old I Pod.  You requested I send you the specifics of both the computer and the I pod which I did.  I have not heard back from you since doing so.  When you get a chance will you please consider revisiting my issue and with the information I provided kindly provide direction and instruction so I can put my new songs into my old I pod.  thanks:  Larry

You should not post your actual email address on the forum.  I don't recall the old forum topic you refer to, so please post a new forum topic (or link to the old one), with the relevant info.  To create a new forum topic, go to the forum category, here in this case

Hello Again:  here is the information I promised to send you:

    Mac Mini:  OSX;  Yosemite

    version: 10.10.05

    Processor:  4GB

    Intel Core:  i5

    Memory:  4GB 1600MHz    DDR3

    Graphics:  Intel HD 5000    1536MB

    I-Pod Information:

    Version:  1.3

    Serial # 4J5483GNTXL

    Model:  MA147LL

    Format:  Windows

    thanks:  Larry

I am not very savvy with computer security so I do apologize.  Ok, as previously stated for reasons I do not know when my I pod is plugged in using the usb cable, my mac mini (2015) does not "see" my I pod, and therefore I can not transfer music from my I tunes into my I pod.  Here is our previous discussion for your review.

    Thank you.

I have an old iPod. How do I transfer my music from my iPod to my new computer so I can get the music on my new iPod?
The Apple customer support rep is wrong.  I have several old iPods (including the very first iPod), and they all work fine with my 2011 Mac mini, running the latest OS X and iTunes.
"Version 1.3" is for the software on the iPod.  It does not specifically identify the iPod model.  All the old ones have a "round dial on the middle." Can you find your iPod model on this document?  (or describe it in more detail)
Depending on the model, you may need to connect the iPod in a specific way.  If your iPod is really old, it may need a FireWire port, instead of a USB port.  Also, do an About This Mac (from the Apple menu).  What does it call your Mac mini model?  For example, mine says "Mac mini (Mid 2011)."

Because this topic was created by another user, with a current ongoing discussion, it would be best for you to create a new topic in this forum, for your specific question.  That way, there will not be any confusion between the two (different) questions being asked.  Also, other users here will be more likely to see your separate question and offer other input.
