Q: MBP: Recurring Kernel Panics, Freezes, Screen Flickering, and Other Strange Behaviors!

Hi everyone,

Since two months ago my MacBook Pro (13 inch, mid-2010) is crashing over and over.

  • Sometimes it has kernel panics, but most of the time it just freezes a few seconds or minutes after startup. The screen turns to black, gray, green, pink or just any random color, and it becomes totally unresponsive until I force shutdown.
  • A few times it has also made those beep sounds indicating no RAM is detected, but normally it is able to boot.

After over a month that I wasn't using it and it was turned off, now it’s actually able to continue for like up to 3 hours before crashing or panicking. But then, it has some other strange issues too:

  • It doesn’t power on or wake from sleep unless it’s connected to the charger. Once it is connected, it wakes up even when the lid is closed! However, when it is on and awake, it can continue without charger.
  • The screen sometimes flickers and has some shadows at the bottom edge.

And btw, other than Panic Reports the “DiagnosticReports” folder is now full of crash reports, spin reports, shutdown stalls and diagnostic reports, which I'm not really sure what they mean.

So far, I have reset the SMC and NVRAM a lot of times.

I've tried booting to safe mode, external drives, and even waiting at the startup menu without booting to any OS, and still it crashed.

Also, I tried inserting the RAMs in different slots one at a time and booting afterwards. But none of these worked, and it still panics!

Does anybody know what might be the problem? Or anyone has had similar cases?

Any help much appreciated!

Here is one of the panic reports, plus photos of how the screen looks like when freezing:

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

    Ciao.

    Thanks for your reply

I have only run the short Apple Hardware Test and it showed “No trouble found”. The extended test can't complete as it freezes. But I will post if i could make it.

The computer again doesn't work for too long, but finally I managed to run EtreCheck and this is the report:

    EtreCheck version: 2.9.12 (265)
    Report generated 2016-05-22 23:54:55
    Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com
    Runtime 1:43
    Performance: Excellent

Clearly the battery should be changed in the MBP, but I do not see that will cure all of the symptoms that you have listed.  Your MBP has had a multitude of kernel panics but I do not see any specific items in the Etrecheck report that would cause them.

My suggestion is to make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians run their forensic tests on your MBP.  They are superior to the AHT.  Bring the kernel panic report with you as well as the display images.

    Ciao.

You have multiple kernel panic reports stored. I recommend you look through them, noting the reason for the panic (e.g, page fault in the one you posted) , and the routine where the panic occurred (kernel task in the report you posted) and the kernel extensions in backtrace: (USB extensions in the panic report you posted).

In general, Software problems will show a kernel panic TREND. The panics will mostly be for about the same reason, in the same routines, nearly every time.

In general, Hardware problems will show a Non-Trend. Since MacOS loads routines at slightly randomized addresses to make hacking more difficult,  both the panic-reason and the routines involved will appear to be near-random.

Example1: specific address in physical RAM is going bad. Panics will occur in different routines and for completely different reasons because MacOS slightly randomizes where things load. Sometimes an Instruction will get clobbered, sometimes data, sometimes a return address.

Example2: a wonky high-speed peripheral is spraying random stuff into memory, causing corruption. Panic reasons will be again be bizarre and show no trend.

    --------

long-mode diagnostic: because that test tries to bang on the memory as hard as possible, it does not take the time to refresh the display. The display may appear to hang for as long as a half hour at a time. This is considered "normal".

You can cause the test to run in loop mode by pressing command-L before starting the actual test. You may want to set this up and let it run all night.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Yeah, the battery finishes more quickly, and was actually showing “Service Battery” at first. It changed to “Replace Soon” after an OS update I guess. I was wondering if that could make or has already made any damage by the continued use.

Unfortunately there are no Apple stores available here but only some authorized service providers, which I’m probably going if there wasn’t any other fixes I can try. They usually charge for the diagnosis too. Hopefully it can be fixed.

No.  The other problems are independent of the battery problem.

    Ciao.

That was interesting. I can say the panic reports are somehow unique, though the majority indicate page fault and general protection. I've included some parts of them here. Based on what you said I think it must be more a hardware issue, also for the fact that it becomes unresponsive even at the startup menu or with different OS.

Now I’m going to loop the long-mode AHT as well, and see what happens.

It's worth mentioning that last year it also started to have some unusual behaviors that exist until now:

One of the USB ports and the camera not working, showing the “USB Devices Disabled: Unplug the devices using too much power...” message once in awhile, and getting warm when in sleep mode.

Or probably, my MacBook has multiple different problems!

How serious does this panic problem seem like? Like something wrong with the whole logic board, the GPU or maybe just the memory!? Do corrupted firmwares also cause this kind of issues?

    Thanks
