I am having problems saving edits in Preview. This only just started happening today for some reason. After I've edited a file on Preview, when I try to close the file down the message comes up saying it "could not be autosaved. Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved". I should add that there's no option to "save as" instead.
Any help would be appreciated!

Quit Preview. Go to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview and grag that pref to your Desktop. Relaunch Preview and test.
EDIT: In 10.7.5 the plist may be in /Library/Preferences/Preview.
Did you mean to drag the whole com.apple.preview folder on to the desktop? Because I have done this and I'm still getting the same message. And how would I put it back in the Library once it's been fixed?
Navigate to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview and drag the one on your Desktop back in.
I meant just the Container.plist file.
So I did as you said and dragged the container.plist file from the com.apple.Preview file, and the message still comes up saying that I cannot autosave...not sure what to do now...do you have any other ideas?
What happens in Safe Mode and does this happen with all apps or just Preview?
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
Disregard what it says about startup, were using it to troubleshoot a different issue.
No, it only seems to be happening with Preview. I've tried starting up with safe mode - no problems seem to be coming up.
OK, that means the issue is confined to your Home folder. Log back into your effected account
Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items. (use the minus sign, do not just hide them) You can aways add them back later)
Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours. Then log out and back in or restart and test.
I have done the first part - deleted 2rd party login items. After restarting, it still hasn't worked. I am yet to check Library/Startup as I can't seem to find a folder in the Library entitled "Startup". Where would I find this?

I found this discussion about AutoSave in Lion. It was the first system where it was implemented, I believe.
I've taken a look at this. But I was editing and saving up until last week...I've had this macbook pro for a while. I'm still not clear what can be done about this?
Any ideas?
