Q: My I mac crashes when I try installing El Capitan. I have a late 2009 model with plenty of disc space. Suggestions?

I was able to get the download to start, but the estimated wait time is 48 hours. It apparently keeps refreshing and estimating a new allotted time amount which progressively is longer. It looks like the progress bar is not starting the download. Will starting in safe boot mode make the download time better?
I have fast internet.
