Q: Music Clips in iWeb

Having happily developed a lovely five page website supporting Wind in the Strings, our harp and flute duet, recent response from a prospective client indicated that the incorporated sound clips did not function correctly in her office. After testing with Safari and Firefox on my MacBook Pro; Internet Explorer, Safari and Chrome on two PCs running Windows 10, the same effect was observed.

Apple has documented the issue, indicating solutions for: (1) SPECIFIC browsers in which the referenced legacy QuickTime module employed may be reactivated or (2) replacing an HTML identifier appropriately for a (hopefully) general solution. After exhaustive (and exhausting) search for the offending legacy code, I came to the conclusion that the code in question is embedded in an Apple support function, the source code for which I lack access.

Does anyone have similar experience and a solution to this vexing problem? We hate to eschew iWeb for a less aesthetically pleasing and more complex website creation tool.

You might find that you will have to give up on iWeb, because iWeb is not a supported product any longer and has not been for the last 4 years at least.

iWeb has not been developed for 6 years and has not been sold or supported by Apple for the last 4 years at least.

I see at the bottom that you say that you are using iWeb 08?  Really - that might be the problem and you would at least need to be using iWeb 09 instead - the only way to upgrade to that know is to purchase the boxed set of iLife 11 from somewhere like Amazon.

However, I would suggest that if you need to upgrade, then as your site is only five pages long, it would not take long to re-build it using software that is currently supported and is actively being developed.

Take a look at EverWeb or Freeway Pro and they are very easy to use and will have all the up-to-date things available which iWeb no longer has.

Time to move on and re-build your site - there is no point in looking for solutions for an outdated product that may not even work soon.

Too true. At the recommendation of our Son-in-Law, I am currently rebuilding the orphan website using Wix, which appears to have the features of interest to me. Yeah, s**t happens - so use it as proper fertilizer.

Yes, Wix is a good option and you can pay a little extra to add your domain name to your site and get rid of the adverts that you get with the free wix site.

They are adding more features all the time and there are some great templates - if you don't mind using the online builder and your site being published on the Wix servers, then this is a good option.

I used iWeb for quite a few years and designed many sites in that time, but then switched to Drupal and Wordpress that suit my needs - I wanted a membership site, so CMS's are better for creating this - Members and Member's only pages that are easy to create with a database type system.

Good that you have found alternative software that is good for you.

Because our requirements for the originally iWeb built website are modest, currently merely informative to the viewer, WIX works rather well. My remaining complaints are:

    1. Subscription requirements which I abhor in ANY software (forget recent-model Microsoft Office for Windows 10), and
    2. Current limitations accessing HTML code - I like to tweak with DreamWeaver occasionally, as I do with the three other sites under my administration.

For the near future, however, WIX is working, which is more than I can say for the low blow the QuickTime enhancement/upgrade supplied.

    You mentioned Drupal.

I employed it four years ago for an interactive application. What I found infuriating was the stone-age debugging facility. Has there been any improvement in the last four years? I dread dealing with Drupal again this year (which may be forthcoming soon) because of the lack of reasonable debugging capability.

If you were using Drupal 4 years ago, then it is quite possible that you would have used Drupal 6?  When I first went to Drupal, I tried 6 and had to abandon Drupal as it was so awful - there were not a lot of things installed as standard, such as CKEditor and I gave up as I could not get that to install using 6.  Drupal 7 was launched and this made all the difference - more user friendly, but now there is Drupal 8 that has a lot more things built into the Core of Drupal as standard.

Take a look again as with Drupal 8 it has come a long way in 4 years and you might be quite surprised - take a look at Drupal.org.

I intend to, if Drupal remains the development platform of choice at the volunteer activity forthcoming. Thanks!
