Reverting to a previous operating system can be a daunting task.
Why won't El Capitan work on your Mac?

May 22, 2016 8:53 AM in response to Pamelafromirelandby BobHarris,Make sure you Mac can upgrade to El Capitan
<Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support>
Mountain Lion,
Mavericks,
Yosemite,
and
El Capitan
All have identical system requirements. If your Mac cannot upgrade to El Capitan, then it cannot upgrade past Lion 10.7.5
If you can upgrade to El Capitan, then you can ONLY get Yosemite, if you downloaded it last year when it was available, and is now sitting in your App Store -> Purchases tab. If you never downloaded Yosemite, it is no longer available for new downloads. It may be possible to convince the Apple Genius bar at you local Apple Store to install Yosemite for you, but that is something at the description of the Apple Store.
