Q: Apple TV stops working every time I watch a show

I have the latest 4th gen Apple TV.  Basically every time I watch a show - on NetFlix, or say Bloomberg TV - it stops.  When it does this I close down the app and switch off the TV.  The show comes back on after 1 to 3 minutes but it in very annoying.  This never happened on my old apple TV.

To resolve this I have followed all the on-line instructions (i.e rebooting, resetting (i.e to factory settings etc)), but the problem still persists.  Whilst sometimes (when it stops working) it does refer to the internet has lost connection; although I doubt this is the case because I can easily use my laptop and phone wifi connections when this happen, and the connection is very strong.  I also have connected the Apple TV to the ethernet but the problems still persist.  My home is also also hooked up to super fast optic fibre broadband as well.

Any ideas or help would be great.  As I said, I have been through all the on-line solutions suggested, so anything else would be helpful.  If no solution found I will just go back to my old apple TV where I did not have these problems.

Thanks

Apple TV (4th generation), iOS 9.3.2

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Thanks WC.  Very useful.  But I guess you buy apple products so things are simple and nontechnical so you do not have to deal with such issues.    I love apple (I own the phone, macbook pro, tablet, TV) but I am finding they are gravitating towards making things more complex for the average user now (and it is not just the issue I have with the TV) and unfortunately at their peril.  Thanks again.

Your network is something that Apple have no control over what so ever. It's rather like blaming Ford for the gas station down the road making it difficult to use the gas pump.

Just out of curiosity, since you have huge bandwidth, why not play the same show from Netflix on your Macbook Pro and ATV at the same time?  Does the signal drop occur on both?

    Hello SOP111,

You may have a DNS problem. How is your DNS configured? Are you using the internet provider's DNS directly?
