Upgrade OS 9.2.1 to 10.8+?

First off, I'm a Windows person...sorry. The only thing I know about eyePads is how to spell eyePad! 😊 I tried reading some of the other threads but there are too many unknowns to get a clear picture of what I need to do. Anyway...

A friend asked me to install his new printer, which I did with no trouble on his Windows systems. However, his wife has an A1566 iPad, which appears to be an Air 2. The current OS is 9.2.1 and the printer requires 10.8+. As far as I can determine the upgrade is possible on this hardware. The question is how to get there from here.

What is a viable upgrade path? I get a sense that it's not a one-step process and will require an OS purchase along the way? Will I be forced to use physical media at some point? The only thing he has to plug into the iPad is the charger.

As a side note, I tried to download the printer drivers (a .ZIP file) and got "Safari can't download this file". I'm not sure what to do with that! I can't even download it on a PC because I can't see an obvious way to get it to the iPad. 😟

Suggestions?

Thank you,

Kevin

An iPad uses the iOS operating system. The current version of that is iOS 9.3.2

The 10.8 that you are referring to is likely for the OS X operating system which is used on a Mac computer -- not an iPad.

You cannot download printer drivers to an iPad.

Typically printing from an iPad is via AirPrint: Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The iPad Air 2 runs on iOS .The 10.8+ requirement is of Apple's OSX operating system ,which is used in MacBooks,iMacs and other Apple Computers.

You have 2 options:

  1. AirPrint which requires a compatible printer
  2. Use an App from the App Store like this one https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hp-eprint/id299531647%3Fmt%3D8&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwj vra-5lu7MAh… Visit link on iPad

Told you I didn't know anything! 😕 I probably could have figured it out if I had taken the thing home and sat down with it but you know how people are when they don't have their device by their side.

Anyway, the printer appears to be AirPrint capable so I've passed along the info to the owner with the suggestion that it should "just work".

Thanks!
