Q: why do i have a padlock within a circle on the top right hand side of my screen on iPhone 6

This article should help you. Your rotation is locked. Swipe from the bottom of the screen to get the control panel and click on the rotation lock.

It is the icon for orientation lock. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up control center. Tap the padlock icon to turn it off. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204547

When you select that, it prevents your screen from rotating when you turn the phone.
