Solution to Google Chrome (Helper) using lots of ram and cpu on mac osx

Hi all,

Some people have many google chrome tabs open, and this is using up lots of ram. It also causes the fan to go crazy sometimes. I searched for a solution for ages, but no solution helped, until I came across the simple solution of using a google chrome extension which hibernates unused tabs. The problem has now totally gone away.

There are a few differnt extensions which will hibernate unused tabs, but the only extension that has enough setting options to make it do what I want, is called “The Great Suspender”.

You can set the time after which the tab is put into hibernation (sleep). The tab automatically unsuspends when it is focussed on, (i.e., you don’t need to then also click on a specific button). And the hibernated tabs will stay in hibernation after you restart the computer.

There are many other settings that can also be tweaked. (After making any changes, remember to click the “save changes” button.)

Hope this helps.

Extra information:

If you right-click the icon (of the great suspender) and then click on “Unsuspend All Tabs”, then this will unsuspend all tabs in the current window only, (not all windows). (Or you can do this via a keyboard shortcut, if you have set this up.)

After unsuspending all tabs in the current window, you can then click on the icon of a google chrome extension called “Awesome Reload All Tabs Button”, and this will reload all the tabs in the current window.

One problem. That extension hasn't been updated in more than 14 months (as of today, November 26, 2016). I would never use an extension that old. Search in extensions for "suspender". There are two others. I'm using one called Tiny Suspender, but I can't give a review because I haven't had it long enough for it's first suspend yet!
