the ethernet cable between my IMac and time capsule is not connecting. Airport Utility cannot find the time capsule. I have tried another cable - also unsuccessful. Any suggestions to cure the problem? It had worked so well until I needed to unplug the time capsule.

First thing I'd recommend checking is your TimeCapsule responding properly, It might be a good idea to take a look at the Soft Reset option at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201945

Thanks for that. I have been trying to avoid a "reset" but may have to. My IMac hard drive failed and was replaced . A fresh instal of El Capitan was completed and files etc recovered from the time capsule. It has been that since i brought the time capsule back from repairers to home that I am unable to re-connect. Time capsule (2nd gen) powers up but it is unable to connect. Airport Utility is unable to locate it. (probably because of - no connection. Don't think it is a faulty cable. Maybe the WAN outlets on either the IMac or Time capsule are faulty. Not sure if that would happen very often.

Not what you want to hear, I am afraid, but the first thing that comes to mind is that a 2nd Gen Time Capsule is at least 6 years old, and as much as 7 depending on when the product was placed into service.
The average useful life of a 2nd Gen Time Capsule was about 3 years, so you have done far better than most of the rest of us. Congrats on that.
As a last gasp measure, you could try resetting the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then attempt to set it up again. The default reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive.....only the network settings will be reset.

I'm assuming that you have already checked the Ethernet port on the iMac by connecting to another device.....like a modem....to make sure that the port is working. It would be extremely rare that an Ethernet port would fail, but it can happen.
