Q: Upgraded to el capitan now can't receive email.

Hi...

I upgraded to el Capitan last night and was pleased that most of my programs work. Who would have guessed that I would not be able to receive my personal email? Settings are good. I also can receive emails on business account via website. Error message says it cannot authenicate personal email. Why not??

I'm still able to receive my personal email on my iPad but not on my 2009 iMac. Have used Disk Utility and CleanMyMac3. No errors. Email is online at RoadRunner so the problem is on the computer and it seems with El Capitan. Any suggestions of what to do next?

Thank you for your help,

Cherie

There are three basic types of mail account: POP, IMAP, and Exchange. Which kind is this?

If you don't know, open the Mail preferences window, select the Accounts tab, and then select the account from the list on the left. Under Account Information, the account type is shown.

YMMV generally on my end TWC is User Name is name@twc.com then password; not sure if road runner is the same and may be similar. The mail server is mal.twc.com so it may be mail.rr.com and outgoing at my end is twc.com without smtp in front.  In Advance is port 995 with use SSL checked. Not sure if that helps.

"CleanMyMac" is a scam and a common cause of instability and poor performance. Depending on what version you have, the developer's instructions may not completely remove it. Please follow those instructions, then do as below.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder may open with an item selected. If it does, move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

    Repeat with this line:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent

Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

You may also have to remove one or more of these items in the same way:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Good morning,

Your information about your settings doesn't seem appropriate because my settings that worked before installing El Capitan remained on the computer. The address actually wasn't even changeable as it was shadowed (not sure what term you would use for this) or not accessible. I did solve the problem though my clicking the option to allow insecure authentication in the advanced options. Of course this is not ideal so I may just call TWC and complain. They charge too much anyway!

I'm confused about your recommendations to eliminate CleanMyMac. What do you think of Memory Clean? Or put another way.....what do you recommend for freeing up memory? Are you advocating never using anything but Disk Utility?

    Please clarify.

THank you very much for your time,

    CHerie

Let the OS handle memory use. By using Memory Clean, the program is 'fighting' the OS, making memory management less efficient.
