Q: Always AOL problems!!!

Hi,

My mother constantly has issues with AOL. I continue to fix it, but it keeps happening. Sometimes it pops up an asks for a password for an outgoing server, sometimes it says "can't use a certain out going server, please use another server", this is the same server it uses when it works.

Is it AOL? Is it some thing she's doing?

I go into the the account settings, all looks fine, or sometimes I'll change something like turning off SSL, changing a port number then it works. Then a week later it crashes.

Any suggestions would be great.

She has a iMac and is running Snow Leopard.

Thanks!!!!

    Hi..

More than likely it's not AOL but the Mac is running v10..6 Snow Leopard. That's a very outdated Mac operating system which Apple no longer provides security updates for. She's bound to have issues accessing the internet and using a browser.

See if this iMac can upgrade to El Capitan > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan

I am a charter subscriber to AOL since 1989 and continue to this day to use my screenname's AOL email as my primary email.

I have loathed AOL's software for years, first using Claris Emailer when it could open the then proprietary AOL email, then Netscape when Emailer would not run in OS X and now Thunderbird to open and send my AOL email.  Apple's Mail program can also be easily setup to open and send AOL mail.

Just google for "AOL email [name your email program of choice]" and instructions should be readily listed for you.

Snow Leopard continues to run fine; yes there are security issues but none that are not present with email on any version of OS X.  Follow this rule:

Do Not Open Any Attachments on email from whom you do not ABSOLUTELY know the sender.  Do you rely on the Subject line, but look at the return email address to be sure you know the sender.

Thanks, I was thinking that maybe an upgrade would work, or at least a clean and re-install. I realize that Snow Leopard is old but everything else seems to work for her, so I didn't want to confuse her, start throwing new stuff at her. Gotta keep it simple. I think the iMac 2010 maybe.

I have set up and re-set up the AOL and searched for others with this this problem, mostly it works... But, it's a pretty regular problem. I even set it up as someone in an earlier post suggested. Step by step. Worked, then it bugged out.

I am not a big fan of installing every single new OS that Apple introduces. I'm still on Yosemite on my Macbook Air.

    thanks!

Lol, this is what happens when one has too many Apple ID's. I'm Roseline. At any rate. I'll upgrade he and see what happens. Possibly re-set up AOL, again.

    Thanks
