are there applications broken by latest OSX?

I'm running OSX 10.8.5. When I'm using my mac, I keep being offered chances to upgrade to the latest version of OSX. I haven't upgraded. My computer is working fine, and I'm concerned that an OSX upgrade would break applications. I have a session I'd like to attend that requires OSX 10.9. Four questions:

1. Is my concern misplaced, and the latest OSX doesn't break applications?

2. If it does break applications, is there a list of the applications?

3. Is OSX 10.9 available? The thinking is that OSX 10.9 has to be closer to my current system the latest OSX.

4. If so, where?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

1 and 2) "Breaking applications" is ambiguous. No built-in apps "broke." For third party apps, check if they are compatible with the latest OS here: http://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx.

3 and 4) No, neither 10.9 or 10.10 are still available. It may be possible if you call Apple.

You get the latest os that will run on your machine.

To get rid the nag, the next time it comes up. Follow the link to look at the brochure. One you've see the greatness, you will not be bothered again until a new os appears.
