Q: Airport Utility not working on Windows Vista

Hi, I have Windows Vista running on my laptop and a single Airport express for my network (directly connected to my router). It's been awhile so I recently opened the Airport Utility program on my computer but when I did, the program on my computer won't show that I have any Airport wireless devices connected. My iPhone app shows it, no problem and my laptop and other devices are connected to the Express with no issues, so I'm pretty sure that this isn't a network issue. I have tried rescanning, reinstalling the Airport Utility program 5.5.3, and resetting my laptop, router, and Express devices, but the program on my computer still won't show it.

Have you tried connecting directly to the router using an ethernet cable?

When properly installed on Windows Vista, the AirPort Utility for Windows (v5.5.3) will install / enable the following:

    • Applications - Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
      • AirPort
      • Apple Software Update
    • Services - Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
      • Bonjour
    • Startup Programs - Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuration
      • AirPort Base Station Agent

Please verify that all of these are correct. If not, although you have done so already, try uninstalling and reinstalling the AirPort Utility for Windows again.

If they are already correct, then try the following:

    • Enable Window's Network Discovery. Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Sharing and Discovery > Network discovery (on)
    • Verify IPv6 Internet protocol is enabled: Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Connection > View Status > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) (checked)

If the AirPort Utility's scan feature still does not "find" the base station, try this workaround: Use the "Configure Other..." option under File in the utility's menu bar. Then enter the base station's LAN-side IP address and base station's administrator password.

I found that Bonjour was disabled, and reenabled it, but that still didn't work. I left the computer alone and off for a few days. Just fired it back up and the first thing that it did was show that the Airport Utility finally found my Airport Express. I didn't do anything to it, so I don't know why it wasn't showing up originally. Thank you both for your help!
