iPhoneIt can't receive messages if it's not connected to the Internet.
Unless your friend has a Wi-Fi network and your iPhone had previously joined it, your Watch will not have Internet access when you're there if your iPhone is not nearby.

Apple WatchHi Michael
Whenever your Apple Watch has become disconnected from your iPhone via Bluetooth, it can connect to a known, compatible Wi-Fi network as a fallback.
Your watch offers a number of features when the paired iPhone is either unavailable (eg turned off) or not within Bluetooth range:
- Play music from a playlist that has been synced to Apple Watch.
- Use the watch to tell the time, along with alarms, timers and the stopwatch.
- Keep track of your activity (Stand, Move, Exercise) with the Activity app.
- Track workouts with the Workout app.
- See your heart rate.
- Display photos from the synced photo album.
- Use Apple Pay to make purchases.
If the watch is disconnected from your iPhone via Bluetooth, but is within range of a (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi network that your iPhone has connected to before (whilst it was connected to your watch via Bluetooth), the watch can connect to that network and you can also (ie in addition to the previously listed features) still:
- Send and receive messages using iMessage.
- Send and receive Digital Touch messages.
- Use Siri.
- Make and receive phone calls and SMS text messages if you have Wi-Fi calling enabled (if supported by your carrier).
- Check the weather.
- Track stocks.
