Q: quicktime record controls disappeared

after upgrading to el capitan, the record controls for quicktime have dissappeared.

I do get that tiny "stop" button up in the top menu bar... but the record controls (which show sound levels and elapsed time) are gone.

These reappear momentarily at end of recording when i hit the stop button.

kinda annoying.

cant find any solutions online...
