Q: MXF to ProRes 422

A client gave me a drive that they got from their camera man. I need to get the files into Apple ProRes 422 to edit but I can't figure out whether to use ClipWrap, Mpegstream Clip or XDCam transfer ... or something else.

Each folder is a card and includes a series of folders: Audio, Clip, Icon, Proxy, Video, Voice All of the Audio and Video files are .MXF.

Any help would be great!!

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Sounds like they shot Panasonic P2...that's the file structure for that format.  None of the converters mentioned will work.  For this you use standard old LOG AND TRANSFER...right inside FCP.

NOW...if they shot P2 that was recorded as DVCPRO HD...that will only come in as DVCPRO HD.  Cannot import that as ProRes...only option you have is DVCPRO HD... but that is a lossless conversion.  If they shot AVCIntra, then you can bring it in as ProRes. In the log and Transfer preferences (sprocket menu in the Log and Transfer interface) there is a place to choose what format of ProRes to import AVCINTRA as. NOT AVCHD...AVCINTRA...

    Shane,

Can you think of why my FCP7 keeps crashing while I am using Log & Transfer for this footage? Shot on P2.

Are your computer specs listed current? Are you running MacOS 10.6.8, or some later, more current OS?

What version of FCP are you running?

OK...I want to check something. Does the main folder contain a CONTENTS folder and a LASTCLIP.TXT file? And does that folder have any symbols in the name? !@#%^&*()/?

Each Main Folder includes a Lastclip.TXT file and a Contents folder with folders that are: Audio, Clip, Icon, Proxy, Video and Voice.

And the folders are named what? Do they contain special characters?

I just realized it could be because the drive is formatted at NFTS-3G. Maybe I need to transfer footage to another drive and reformat this one as MacOS Extended (Unjournaled?)

Folders are named:     Audio - .MFX Files

                                        Clip - .XML Files

                                        Icon - .BMP Files

                                       Proxy - Empty Folder

                                       Video - .MFX Files

                                       Voice - Empty Folder

OK...yes, the drive you are using as your capture scratch should be Mac OS Extended.

Now...I'm not talking about the names of the folders INSIDE the CONTENTS folder. what is the name of the MAIN FOLDER that has the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT?

    FOLDERNAME?>Contents & LastClip.txt

He just labelled them Card 1, 2 etc. I think I will copy all of the footage to another drive tonight and then reformat this one correctly and see what happens from there. If all is sorted then I'll give you the big Correct Answer check off!

You should not be using the drive with the cards to import the media. The card archives and the media need to be on separate drives. If you lose that drive, you lose EVERYTHING.
