Q: iMac: graphics freeze, mouse moves

iMac early 2009

iMac9,1

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

8GB 1067MHz DDR3

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

OS X 10.10

Seemingly without pattern, my iMac will freeze but the mouse pointer will still freely move. I have to hold the power button to force a shut down. Sometimes it will start up fine after this, sometimes it will not. When booted in Safe Mode I have not experienced the issue. The first occurrence happened on El Capitan. I have erased the hard drive via Disk Utility from a bootable Yosemite USB (then partitioned it in 3 sections) and installed OS X 10.10 from the App Store via USB. I then updated via the App Store to 10.10.5. I cannot seem to force the error. There is NO software installed other then what is included with Yosemite.

I suspect the graphics card fans/vents are clogged with dust.

What should I try to pinpoint the issue?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Still happening. I really need suggestions.

I opened the iMac and cleaned all the dust hoping maybe it was a blocked vent. It really wasn't all the dusty.

    The issue still persists.

I read in a couple places buttons on the keyboard may be held down even if they look fine. I have blown out both keyboards, 1 wireless and 1 wired. The problem still occurs only in a normal boot environment. Everything runs fine in Safe Mode. Doesn't matter which keyboard is being used.

It does sound like a graphics card issue.

Run Disk Utility > First Aid booted from your Recovery Partition

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

Also use Apple Hardware Test, though it's not the most reliable in detecting failures.

    I think so too.

OS X Recovery Disk Utility found nothing wrong.

I'm having trouble running AHT. Holding D at startup doesn't seem to do anything. I can try TechTool.

Would it be a good test to disable accelerated graphics to see if that eliminates the problem? Is that even possible?

And now, the system won't even boot in Normal mode, only in Safe Mode. It will load to a gray screen (after the Apple logo gray screen) then the mouse becomes the beachball and it's stuck there.

If it works normally in Safe Mode, then please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

I was able to get AHT to run. It did not detect any issues.

    EtreCheck:

My understandning is ucupdate and watchdogd only fail in SafeMode, right?

Looks like the problem is in your fonts. Did you recently install a new font?

Try clearing font data bases and caches

    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/08/clear-font-caches-databases-mac-os-x/

EDIT: Also not a very good idea to keep Gatekeeper on "Anywhere".

    I haven't installed any fonts. It's a clean install.
    Cleaned fonts via Terminal.

Ran Etrecheck again, looks the same:

I'm having trouble running AHT. Holding D at startup doesn't seem to do anything.

On a 2009 iMac you should be running AHT from the system disks that came with the computer. Are you?

Yes. I finally was able to run the AHT from the disk. It returned no problems at all.

Since it works in Safe Mode, log back in to your normal account and go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items, and delete any third party login items. (use the minus sign, do not just hide them) You can aways add them back later)Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours. Then log out and back in or restart and test.

The only item in Login Items was iTunes Helper. I removed it. There was nothing in /Library/Startupitems.

Still can only boot in Safe Mode.
