Q: how do I display long filenames in finder list window by default

iMac 27" 16GB 1TBHybrid Aug 2015; El Capitan 10.11.03 installed 10/23/15.  I use long filenames--80 to 160 characters or more. I upgraded my 2-month-old iMac to El Capitan 2 days ago. The finder does not remember my window configuration for a given folder in list view. The window will open anew as a small window showing a few characters of the name. I can drag the window to widen it, find the little hidden field separator and widen the name field to display 60 or more characters. But if I close the window and later reopen it, the name field has shrunk back to a few characters. I bought a 27-inch iMac so that I could work with long filenames, but having to resize the window and the name field every time I close and reopen a finder window is maddening. I did not have this issue with Yosemite. I have hundreds of census records named in the format "Year Census-State County City-Surname Family members-Record source." These names can be quite long. I want to open the Finder List View and quickly scroll through the file list to fine a particular census sheet without having to reconfigure the window. It should remain the same as I left it last time--as it did in Yosemite. I've tried Finder Preferences and View Options. I've discarded ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Any ideas. So far no solution with Apple Support on the phone.
