Q: Macbook air 7_2 running very slow (kernel_task issue)

My mac book air has been running very slow of late, and I updated to Yosemite after this problem started. The kernel_task seems to be taking up too much of my CPU% and goes upto 1500%. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

See this thread <What is AppEH, and how do I get rid of it permanently?>

I suspect these may be related.  I just suspect.

So I figured that this issue does not occur when the battery level is high. Now it is 100%. Could this indicate an issue with the battery?

I did that. Thank you. So I noticed that the computer starts slowing down and the kernel_task issue starts again when the battery level reaches 80%. Performance is good above 80%

With a low battery, how does it work if you plug in the power supply?

Yes. The performance does get better when I plug in the power supply.

           255%    kernel_task

Did you just catch the kernel at a bad moment, or is this a long term behavior

Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor

Monitor CPU, Disk I/O, Network I/O and Energy and see if you can identify a process or set of processes that are consuming a lot of resources.

That might indicate what is pushing the kernel_task to use so much CPU.

By the way, are you by any chance in the middle of encrypting your SSD using System Preferences -> Security -> FileVault (or decrypting the disk).  This would all happen in kernel space and not involve any other processes.

The kernel_task has been happening for over a week now, and its there most of the time. There is no encryption or decryption going on. I am attaching screenshots of the cpu usage, memory, and disk. Kindly assist. TIAScreen Shot 2016-05-27 at 12.08.18 pm.png

    This is an "Experiment"

    Boot into "Safe" mode

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

and see if kernel_task is consuming so much CPU.

The kernel_task is doing a lot of write I/O (2.47GB since you booted your Mac).  Chances that is part of the problem.  The question is, what is causing that much kernel I/O.   Generally if an application, utility, program, etc... is asking for the I/O, they are charged for the I/O.  But if a kernel extension initiates the I/O, then the kernel is charged for the I/O.  This is the same for CPU usage.

This is why I speculated that maybe FileVault was in the middle of encrypting or decrypting the file system, as that is a kernel task (NOTE: what I'm talking about is just the initial encryption of the disk right after enabling FileVault, or deciding to disable FileVault; this would NOT be the normal FileVault operation).  But if you are not using FileVault that cannot be the problem.

Yes, kernel task is occupying so much CPU in safe mode as well. And the fire vault is off. I ran Apple Diagnostics, but there were no hardware issues. I also upgraded to EI Capitan thinking it might solve the problem. But unfortunately it did not.
