It only saves a copy of the working library every 15 minutes or so. What is it doing that bothers you? You shouldn't even notice it…it's just the database that gets copied.
If you want to save a version of your project in a specific state, you can do that with Duplicate Project and Duplicate Project as Snapshot.

Did you use FCP7? Saving is different now.The FCPX database does not ever require saving; it's always open, known as a hot file. As Russ says, the autosave of the library is nearly invisible and instaneous.

What is "driving you mad"?
There must be some other issue going on, as already mentioned, it's invisible when it operates correctly.
