iTunes would not start, telling me "damaged installation, Error Code 42037", please reinstall iTunes.
- how do I remove iTunes?
- is it necessary to do this or are there easier ways?
- any idea what caused this?

You can easily reinstall iTunes on OS X. Go to https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ for the download link. Download the file and reinstall iTunes on your Mac.
