How do you import a DVD into FCP X?

You have to go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy, click the padlock to authenticate, then change from "Mac App Store" to "Mac App Store and identified developers" or "Anywhere". I prefer the middle option, which is safer.

Hey Andy. How was it that you were forced to switch from FCP 7? The two apps are pretty different but if you stay with it you may find that you'll never want to the legacy version. (That was so with me – and I was a real fan of the FCS suite – as well as many of the other contributors here.) Luckily there are lots of good tutorials to help make the transition. And check out the Final Cut support site.

As for preferences. System Preferences > Privacy & Security.

You cannot import directly. Going through HandBrake, as you mentioned before, is viable.

Unless I'm mistaken, there was also no direct way to import DVD into Final Cut 7, either.

FCP 7 and earlier required additional software. Assuming your DVD's were not copyright protected I imagine that you used MPEG Streamclip to rip and to output a mov which could then be brought into FCP.

What happened when you tried to install the FCS applications? Although I have not installed them on 10.11, others have reported successful installs. (The latest OS I have tested FCP 7 on is 10.10 though I retain a 10.6 for work of any consequence.)

Maybe you had a data DVD with one or more movies recorded on it. That would work like any other drive (and still works with FCP X, if the movies are in a supported format, like a typical h264 mov or mp4 file).

AFAICT what you described just could not be done with a "video DVD" (meaning one would could play in a typical living room dvd player).

That's what I was asking. Suggest uninstalling with FCS Remover from Digital Rebellion and reinstalling using the installation DVDs.

Also, I would suggest to anyone using pro apps that App Store preferences be set to not install app updates automatically.
